Split Opinions On $39M Binance Donation Rejection To MCCF

Divided opinions have emerged after the Malta Community Chest Fund rejected a cryptocurrency donation of €39 million from Binance.
Speaking with Times of Malta, President Myriam Spiteri Debono described the funds as a ‘bogus donation’ and pointed to Binance’s negative international reputation.
The MCCF had worked hard to protect the fund’s reputation, the President told ToM. ‘It would be unfair to other donors who are in good faith, who abide by the laws.’
The Prime Minister disagreed, saying that it upsets him that a sum like that could possibly be lost.
‘If there is a chance to save the situation, I appeal for mutual agreement’, urged Robert Abela.
Green Party ADPD supported the President’s decision. ‘The President stood firm when she refused a donation from the company Binance, a company that is not new to rather serious scandals.’
‘This decision shows her integrity and her commitment to protect not only the reputation of the Malta Community Chest Fund but also that of the people who seek its help’, Chairperson Sandra Gauci said on behalf of ADPD.
Contrarily, lawyer Franco Debono said that the decision only hurts the sick.
‘If the money had dubious origin or unexplained wealth, they are confiscated by the government, right? And when the government confiscates them, what happens with the money? Use them to heal the sick, amongst other uses’, said Debono.
Debono’s position was also echoed by Edward Zammit Lewis, who said that despite the cryptocurrency sector definitely needing regulation, the money still could have been used to help those in need.
