Solar Farm At Lapsi Reverse Osmosis Plant Connected To Grid

A new solar farm at the Lapsi Reverse Osmosis Plant has been successfully connected to Malta’s electricity grid, marking another step in the country’s shift towards renewable energy. The project, which forms part of the Water Services Corporation’s (WSC) Green Bonds initiative, was announced by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli during a site visit with WSC CEO Karl Cilia.
With an investment of €600,000 financed through green bonds, the solar installation spans 3,300 square metres and is equipped with 888 photovoltaic panels, each with a capacity of 580 Wp. Together, the panels provide a system capacity of 515 kWp and are expected to generate around 820,000 kWh of clean electricity each year. This output is equivalent to powering approximately 190 households, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while supporting Malta’s renewable energy goals.

Minister Dalli highlighted that such projects not only create cleaner energy but also secure Malta’s future by fostering sustainable growth and energy independence. WSC CEO Karl Cilia added that the initiative reflects the corporation’s long-term commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation, positioning WSC as a leader in large-scale sustainable projects.
The Lapsi solar farm complements WSC’s wider sustainability strategy, which continues to be supported by Malta’s pioneering Green Bonds scheme.
