SOLAQUA focuses on the intelligent use of natural resources, such as the sea, to develop new and advanced solar technology. This technology can be installed near coastlines and will help support renewable energy needs in a more efficient and cost-effective way.

During the launch, the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, stated, “The SOLAQUA project represents a strategic step towards a more sustainable, smarter, and more resilient Malta. This is a clear example of how local ideas can be turned into concrete results that not only address today’s global challenges but also create new economic opportunities for our country. This is an investment not only in research but in our economic and environmental future.”

Professor Luciano Mulè Stagno, who is leading the SOLAQUA project, said,

“This project is a testament to the talent, dedication, and capability we have in Malta. We believe that through collaboration between public institutions, academia, and the private sector, we can create technologies that have a global impact and lead to sustainable solutions that continue to place Malta at the forefront of research.”

SOLAQUA is expected to have a significant economic impact by positioning Malta within the European market, where between €50 and €100 billion are invested annually in solar energy systems.
