Snorkelling, Boat Rides, And Clean-Ups Among Activities For ‘Marine Awareness Week’ By Ambjent Malta

A week-long series of activities organised by Ambjent Malta in celebration of Marine Awareness Week has drawn public participation across the country, combining education, recreation, and environmental stewardship.
The initiative featured a variety of events including guided snorkelling sessions, traditional boat rides, beach and underwater clean-ups, and informative talks delivered by staff from the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness.
The week’s programme was held with the support of the Energy and Water Agency, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), and the Saving Our Blue campaign. Participants explored sites such as St Paul’s Islands, the Salini Salt Pans, and the Mellieħa Bay coastline, gaining insight into Malta’s marine biodiversity and environmental challenges.
Clean-up operations were also a key feature, including an underwater clean-up in St Paul’s Bay harbour, reflecting Ambjent Malta’s commitment to marine restoration efforts.
Minister Miriam Dalli joined a clean-up at Golden Bay (Ramla tal-Mixquqa), where she emphasised the broader purpose of such events. She satated, “These activities help us raise greater awareness about the importance of protecting our marine environment. While cleaning this bay, we noticed most of the waste consisted of small litter that isn’t immediately visible. These items, once in the sea, cause serious harm. We will continue to raise awareness and take action to tackle this issue.”

A snorkelling session at Golden Bay, led by Ambjent Malta and ERA representatives, gave participants a close look at the area’s protected marine habitats. Meanwhile, a boat tour around St Paul’s Islands included educational commentary from scientific officers at Ambjent Malta, who explained the ongoing efforts to conserve Malta’s marine ecosystems.
The seabed clean-up in St Paul’s Bay forms part of Ambjent Malta’s wider work to enhance marine biodiversity and restore ecological balance in coastal waters.

Speaking about the impact of the initiative, Paul Debono, Director of Communications at Ambjent Malta, said, “Marine Awareness Week and its related activities from boat tours to clean-ups contribute not only to the protection of our marine environment but also serve as a valuable platform to engage with the public through educational and recreational experiences. Ambjent Malta’s team shared key information on the importance of preserving our marine ecosystems for the benefit of the community and future generations.”
