Sliema Mayor Calls for Urgent Action on Fish Farm Slime Reaching Shores

Sliema Mayor John Pillow has raised strong concerns after slime from fish farms once again reached the town’s swimming zones, calling the situation “unacceptable” and demanding immediate action from authorities.

In a post on social media, Pillow said this was the third time in just a few days that the sticky residue had drifted onto Sliema’s coast, coating rocks and preventing residents and visitors from enjoying the sea.

He stressed that the community deserves clean and safe bathing areas, not pollution that damages the environment, tourism, and overall quality of life.

“The fish farms are very far from the coast. So why is this slime being allowed to reach the shore? Why is it not collected immediately as it leaves the fish farms?” the mayor asked.

In a follow-up post the next day, Pillow noted that no action had yet been taken, with swimming areas still covered in slime. He reiterated his demand for urgent clean-up efforts and stricter enforcement on operators.

“As Mayor of Sliema, I will keep pressing until something is done. Our people deserve better. Our sea deserves better,” Pillow declared.
