PN MP and Shadow Minister for Cleansing Eve Borg Bonello recently took to the streets with a waste collection crew to gain firsthand insight into the daily challenges faced by workers in Malta’s waste management sector.

Borg Bonello, who is preparing to unveil new proposals for the sector, joined contractors on their morning rounds, observing the issues that complicate their work.

In a video shared on her social media, she highlighted problems such as illegal parking that blocks garbage trucks, residents placing recycling in black bag collection days, and open bags spilling across the streets.

“To understand a problem, you need to see it and experience it. That’s why I went to collect rubbish,” Borg Bonello said, emphasising the importance of hands-on understanding.

The shadow minister stressed that these seemingly small mistakes accumulate, creating bigger obstacles for workers and the waste collection system as a whole.

Her visit comes amid ongoing debates about waste management in Malta, with local councils and contractors calling for greater public awareness and stricter enforcement of rules.

By engaging directly with waste collection staff, Borg Bonello aims to shed light on the sector’s daily realities while preparing measures to improve efficiency, safety, and accountability.
