Alex Borg, recently elected Opposition Leader of the Nationalist Party in September 2025, marked World Mental Health Day with a personal reflection on wellbeing and self-care.

Writing about his own approach, Borg said, “Everyone has their own way of resting mentally some go for a walk, some read a book, and others head to the gym. For me, it is precisely there that I feel in my ‘safe space’, where I can forget the daily pressures for a while.”

He emphasised the widespread nature of mental health challenges in Malta, “During my campaign, I saw just how common mental health problems are. In Malta, more than 40,000 people struggle with these issues, often alone. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness it is a sign of courage.”

To address the issue, Borg announced that he has appointed a Shadow Minister responsible for Loneliness, aiming to remind those who are suffering that they are not alone.

He concluded with a call to collective action, “Let us be a society that cares for one another. When we take care of our mental health, we build a stronger, healthier community.”
