After a gruelling week of sweltering temperatures, Malta is finally catching a slight break from the heat.

Following several days where real feel temperatures soared above 40°C, today’s forecast offers some much needed relief, with highs of around 30°C, a noticeable drop from Friday’s blistering 41°C peak.

The cooler conditions come after a week long heatwave that saw real feel temperatures remain consistently above 40°C from Monday through Friday.

While actual air temperatures ranged between 32°C and 40°C, the heat index peaked at a scorching 42°C on Tuesday. Adding to the discomfort, the UV index reached an extreme level of 11 on Wednesday.

The heatwave was described as unusual by experts, driven by a jet stream pulling in hot desert air rather than a standard high pressure system.

Hazy skies caused by suspended desert dust were also observed. Health authorities urged the public to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak hours, and follow official health advice.

Today’s cooler weather comes with a breeze (wind force 6), especially along the coast, a welcome change for many. But with the UV index still at a strong 10, sunscreen remains a must.
