As revealed by Times of Malta and confirmed by MaltaDaily, a new Jurassic World film, featuring Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, is scheduled to begin shooting in Malta this summer.
The production has secured almost all facilities at the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara for filming between July and September.
While only part of the movie will be filmed in Malta, the studios offer essential resources like infinite-horizon water tanks for large-scale effects and underwater shots.
The Jurassic franchise, which debuted in 1993 with Jurassic Park, has seen several sequels, including the 2022 film Dominion, partly filmed in Malta. Scenes shot in Valletta, Vittoriosa, Mellieħa, and Pembroke depicted Malta as a hub for a dinosaur black market.
The new film’s details are scarce, but it’s expected to premiere in July 2025, with Johansson in a leading role.
Johansson, known for her roles in Lost in Translation and as Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ films, brings star power to the production.
Malta’s attractive rebate scheme, offering a 40% cashback on production expenses, has enticed big-budget productions to the island. The government aims to maintain this rebate to bolster Malta’s position as a filming destination and enhance its tourism strategy with the film industry as a significant contributor.
