Scalp Cooling Service Launched At Gozo General Hospital

Gozo General Hospital has launched a new service for oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy, representing an important advance in supportive care. This development was made possible by a generous donation of a Paxman Scalp Cooling machine from the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation.

The scalp cooling technology helps reduce hair loss caused by chemotherapy, offering patients the same option available at the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (SAMOC) in Malta. By minimising hair loss, the system supports patients’ emotional well-being and helps them maintain a sense of normality during a challenging treatment process.
Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, highlighted that this new service will benefit Gozitan patients by providing access to scalp cooling on the island itself. He explained that this move complements the government’s ongoing efforts to expand cancer care services in Gozo. Additionally, the hospital plans to enlarge one of its treatment wards in the coming months, allowing more patients to receive care locally without needing to travel to Malta.

Esther Sant, Chairperson of the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation, expressed hope that the donated machine will significantly support patients and positively influence their treatment experience. This initiative marks a vital step in improving cancer care in Gozo.
