A convention is being finalized to protect the Għaqda tal-Mużika San Gejtanu AD 1906 from imminent eviction risks.
The Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government has engaged in discussions with the proprietors of the Għaqda tal-Mużika San Gejtanu AD 1906 premises to ensure the preservation of this esteemed musical institution and shield it from potential eviction threats.
The association faced the looming danger of eviction due to legal complications stemming from pre-1995 rent regulations.
Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici elucidates the ongoing efforts to safeguard band clubs facing eviction, underscoring the heightened significance of this endeavor following UNESCO’s recognition of Malta’s festa as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Minister Bonnici underscores the Government’s commitment to acting in accordance with legal and procedural norms, both in dialogue with property owners and the musical society itself.
He elaborates that upon finalization of the contract, the property will be integrated into a portfolio of premises serving as headquarters for musical societies, managed by a dedicated section within the Maltese Arts Council.
The Government’s investment for acquiring this property, once the convention materializes into a formal contract, is estimated at €2,848,700.
In total, the Ministry has secured 5 headquarters of musical societies, with 6 more under negotiation, excluding the agreement pertaining to the Għaqda tal-Mużika San Gejtanu.
Upon completion of respective acquisitions, the total investment to preserve these musical institutions will amount to €19 million.
