Santa Luċija has made history by becoming the first local council in Malta to name a street in honour of the island’s native honey bee, Apis mellifera ruttneri. The newly designated Triq In-Naħla Maltija (Maltese Honey Bee Street) recognises the vital role of the endemic honey bee in Malta’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.

The initiative, led by the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee, is part of a wider campaign to raise awareness of the species and its ecological importance. Local councils across Malta have been encouraged to name streets and public spaces after the honey bee, with suggested names including ‘Triq In-Naħla Maltija’ and ‘Ġnien l-Insett Nazzjonali’ (National Insect Garden).

“With this simple yet meaningful gesture, Santa Luċija has brought conservation into the heart of its community,” said a spokesperson for the Foundation. “It is a proud moment for environmental awareness and civic leadership.”

The decision reflects Santa Luċija’s commitment to environmental responsibility, and sets an example for other localities to follow. It highlights how local government can actively support national efforts to protect Malta’s unique species.

The Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri) has long played a crucial role in Malta’s ecosystems, pollinating native flora and contributing to biodiversity.
