Rubble Wall Restoration At Wied Għollieqa

The Wied Għollieqa Environment Centre recently hosted a unique, hands-on tutorial on rubble wall restoration, led by none other than Simon Buttigieg — a history teacher and one of Malta’s pioneering conservationists from the early 1990s.
The session focused on repairing a section of the historic rubble wall at Wied Għollieqa, which had partially collapsed in recent months. With remarkable skill and patience, Simon demonstrated the traditional methods of carefully selecting, shaping, and setting each stone — a practice that has preserved Malta’s agricultural and natural landscapes for centuries.
Wied Ghollieqa Environment Centre posted, “Decades ago, Simon laid the foundations of Wied Għollieqa’s upper terraces, stone by stone, tree by tree, with a vision for ecological stewardship and landscape resilience. Yesterday, he returned to the valley he helped shape, continuing the work he began over 30 years ago.
