Robert Abela Plays Football With Syrian Refugees In Jordan

During an official visit to Jordan, Prime Minister Robert Abela toured the Al Za’atari refugee camp, the world’s largest facility of its kind, run by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Home to around 70,000 Syrian refugees, the camp provides critical protection and support to people who have fled conflict.
Dr Abela met with UNHCR staff, recognising their vital work in supporting vulnerable communities, particularly children — who make up half the camp’s population, with 20% under the age of five.
The camp hosts 32 schools, educating 23,000 students, and features eight health centres, one of which operates 24/7. Essential services such as food, water, and electricity are also provided.
The Prime Minister engaged with several residents and witnessed various initiatives aimed at self-sufficiency, including craftwork and income-generating projects.
He also met with families to hear personal stories of displacement and resilience.
Demonstrating Malta’s commitment to humanitarian support, Dr Abela announced that the Maltese Government would contribute financially to aid the camp’s operations. He also shared a light-hearted moment playing football with children at the camp — a symbol of unity across cultures.
