The Għargħur Local Council recently hosted its inaugural Għargħur European Week of Sports 2024, an eight-day celebration of athleticism featuring 19 events.

Over 150 participants engaged in various activities, including running competitions, fitness classes, pool matches, and football tournaments. The event raised nearly €2,053 for charity, blending sports with community spirit and philanthropy.

Leading the initiative was Mariah Meli, Għargħur’s Local Council Minority Leader for sports, family, and health. Driven by a commitment to inclusivity, Mariah’s goal was to promote local sports and support Puttinu Cares, an organization close to her heart.

Despite rainy weather, the week began with an All Stars Tournament hosted by Għargħur Football Club, followed by diverse fitness sessions led by trainers like Josette Magri and Martin Fenech. Community figures such as Neil Agius and Leanne Bartolo also contributed to the event’s momentum.

Heartfelt moments included a 5K Fun Run, where a runner found inspiration to push through upon seeing athlete Neil Agius in the crowd. Community involvement was strong, with local residents and businesses contributing resources, and public figures like Miss Għargħur promoting the event.

According to information provided by Education Minister Clifton Grima during a recent parliamentary session, over 35,000 students are currently enrolled in state schools for the 2024-2025 academic year.

This figure includes students from primary, middle, and secondary schools.

The total number of students across state primary schools has reached 22,107, slightly down from last year’s 23,101. Meanwhile, in state middle schools, the student population stands at 5,009, showing a minor decrease from the 5,166 students registered last year.

On the other hand, secondary schools have experienced a slight increase, with student numbers rising from 7,694 last year to 7,811 this year.

Minister Grima’s response was delivered during a parliamentary session in response to questions raised by MP Justin Schembri, who sought clarity on the current state of student enrolment in governmental schools.
