The general consensus amongst zebras is a black-and-white stripe pattern, but a little calf has defied the odds and gave the pattern a twist. Born in Kenya’s Mara Reserve, the baby zebra rocks a polka-dot pattern and spotted by a group of photographers who were on the search for rhinos. Photographer Frank Liu noticed the calf which seemed to be of an entirely different species.
Named Tira by a Massai guide named, you guessed it, Antony Tira, the zebra was thought to have been captured and painted upon. But after this was proven incorrect, Tira followed the tradition of naming animals of significance after being the one to find it. The polka-dot pattern seems to have occurred due to a genetic disorder called pseudo-melanism which forces animals to display stripe pattern abnormalities.
