Rangers Issue Warning After Ladder Lodged Into Aħrax Tree

‘Aħrax Pine Trees are having a hard time due to human negative impact’, the Malta Ranger Unit said on social media.

‘Did you know that as per Trees and Woodlands Protection you can’t affix anything or do damage to a protected tree, such as Pine trees’, the MRU wrote as they shared photos of a ladder lodged into a tree in the Aħrax area.

‘Every weekend at Aħrax, our Rangers are seeing persons using the trees in irresponsible manners.’

People are not only reportedly kindling fires directly underneath the trees, but also damaging the bark by hammering in nails and hooks, or attaching hammocks with thin rope that digs into the bark.

‘Trunk wounds that penetrate the bark will damage the cambium layer, a thin layer of vascular tissue, which is vital to movement of water and nutrients.’

‘Our Rangers will continue to talk to every group at Aħrax, every weekend and during the week, until we see an improvement.’
