Rangers Intervene As Picnicker Damages Protected Pine Tree At Aħrax

A routine patrol by the Malta Ranger Unit in the Aħrax woodlands led to intervention after a picnicker was caught damaging a protected pine tree.
According to the Malta Ranger Unit, Rangers spotted an individual high up in the tree attempting to break off a branch. “They immediately approached the offender and also made the group take out the illegal bonfire under the trees,” the Unit said in a statement.
It was later discovered that the individual in the tree was a minor, acting under instructions from an adult in the group. The intention was to use the broken branch from the protected pine tree to fuel the bonfire.
Due to the irreversible damage caused to the tree, the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) was called to the scene to assess the harm and determine any necessary enforcement actions.
The individuals involved admitted full responsibility for the offence and expressed regret upon realising the environmental impact of their actions.
The Malta Ranger Unit reminded the public that, under Woodlands Regulations (SL 549.123), it is illegal to damage protected trees or to attach anything to them.
