As part of the Islands Cleanup initiative, over 60 volunteers from government entities, NGOs, and private companies participated in a clean-up at White Tower Beach. The event was organised by the Saving Our Blue campaign, Project Green, and Clean Malta.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleanliness Glenn Bedingfield visited the site, praising the volunteers’ efforts. The initiative aims to raise awareness about public cleanliness and tackle illegal dumping while encouraging greater involvement from government bodies, voluntary organisations, and the private sector.

Minister Dalli emphasised that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and that such events symbolise a shift in mindset, urging proactive action to create a cleaner environment for future generations. Parliamentary Secretary Bedingfield echoed this sentiment, urging citizens to report illegal dumping and participate in national clean-up efforts.

During the event, all illegally dumped materials were sorted on-site, ensuring recyclable items were properly processed to reduce waste going to landfills. The Islands Cleanup initiative continues to organise clean-up activities throughout the year at various beaches and valleys, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

A massive king penguin chick named Pesto, who now weighs as much as both his parents combined, has become a social media sensation and a major attraction at an Australian aquarium.

At just 9 months old and weighing 22 kilograms (49 pounds), Pesto is the heaviest penguin chick ever recorded at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, according to education supervisor Jacinta Early. In comparison, his devoted parents, Hudson and Tango, each weigh 11 kilograms (24 pounds).

As Pesto has grown, so has his international fame. An aquarium statement revealed that over 1.9 billion people worldwide have seen him via social media.

His keepers have however confirmed that Pesto will be losing weight stating, “He’s going to start losing that really adorable baby fluff. It might take him one to two months to really get rid of it. Then he’ll be nice and sleek and streamlined,”.

Xiaomi Overtakes Apple To Become World’s Second Biggest Smartphone Brand

Sep 21 2024 Share

In August 2024, Xiaomi overtook Apple to claim the position of the world’s second-largest smartphone brand, as reported by Counterpoint Research.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for Xiaomi, especially considering its month-on-month sales remained relatively flat. However, the company capitalized on Apple’s seasonal sales dip, allowing Xiaomi to surpass the tech giant for the first time in several years.

Xiaomi’s success can be attributed to a well-executed strategy of releasing key models that target specific price segments. By offering a diverse product lineup catering to various customer needs and budgets, the company was able to strengthen its market position.

Additionally, Xiaomi’s aggressive marketing campaigns, particularly in regions like Latin America, played a crucial role in sustaining its momentum even during typically slow sales periods.

This multifaceted approach has helped Xiaomi maintain steady growth in the competitive global smartphone market.

There have been many other phone brands such as One Plus and Huawei that have tried to enter Samsung’s and Apple’s duopoly, however it now seems that Xiaomi has planted itself as a competitor to the big boys.
