Protest Outside Mediterraneo Marine Park: Activists Demand Action
Local

A peaceful protest was held this morning outside Mediterraneo Marine Park, calling for immediate action over what campaigners have described as “shocking” animal welfare conditions at the attraction.

Organised under the Waves Not Walls campaign, the protest featured the public reading of a strongly worded statement by the Earth Systems Association, backed by 27 animal welfare organisations, including three international groups.

Protesters accused the park of keeping dolphins, sea lions and birds in cramped, barren enclosures with no enrichment or protection from the heat, even during extreme summer temperatures.

Dolphins were said to be circling aimlessly in small tanks, while other animals were allegedly being forced to perform daily.

The statement also referred to alleged animal deaths, cover-ups, and a lack of transparency from park management.

Campaigners argue these conditions breach EU animal welfare laws and violate the animals’ basic rights.

Among their demands are an independent investigation into the park’s practices, the immediate suspension of all animal shows and swim-with-dolphin sessions, and proper veterinary care.

They are also calling for a long-term plan to close the facility and re-home the animals in sanctuaries.
