Project Green inaugurates the first Green Open Campus in Malta

Students can now work and study in a new 7,400-square-metre open space through new facilities such as free Wi-Fi and charging points. Project Green launched this new Green Open Campus at Millbrae Grove, next to the MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts, in Mosta.

Ministers Miriam Dalli and Clifton Grima, together with Project Green CEO Steve Ellul, emphasised the importance of open spaces where students can interact and study in a peaceful environment, conducive to their mental wellbeing.

The Green Open Campus is equipped with charging points for electronic devices and public Wi-Fi, so that students and other visitors can study or work in these green surroundings. Internet connectivity is free and open to all.

Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli explained that as part of this project, five MCAST students are collaborating with Project Green to design and decorate the garden’s benches, encouraging this student community to take ownership of this space by embellishing it to their liking.

“Through different initiatives, we are showing how open spaces can have different purposes in our community. They are not only recreational areas but can also be tranquil spaces where one can study, read or work. When we incorporate our natural environment in our daily activities, we improve our quality of life and mental wellbeing,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.

Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima highlighted the importance of open spaces and green spaces within an educational environment.

“In all our recent infrastructural projects, we worked to provide the best possible educational environment, whilst incorporating open spaces that contribute to the students’ wellbeing. Even in this educational institution, major infrastructural projects are underway so that we continue to make MCAST a better learning environment for an enhanced educational experience to all students,” said Minister Grima.

Project Green CEO Steve Ellul said that, “This project was carried out through a collaboration with MCAST students. Every open space has a specific theme, and this open space is dedicated to students. In this case, it is a project by youths for youths.”

The Green Open Campus at Millbrae Grove includes some 205 trees, 155 of which were planted through an initiative in collaboration with Puttinu Cares, with each tree representing a €300 donation from the public to this voluntary organisation. This project will serve as a blueprint for other similar projects that are being planned for the near future.

Hundreds more blue sailor jellyfish populate Maltese beaches

Marine biologist Alan Deidun shared some more images of hundreds of ‘by-the-wind’ sailor jellyfish, known as ‘qlugħ’ in Maltese.

Speaking to MaltaDaily, Deidun highlighted how this is the only jellyfish species that has a name in Maltese.

Sharing information about the Velella velella jellyfish through the ‘Spot the Jellyfish Campaign’, Deidun said that the sting of this species is classified as being of low irritation and therefore not dangerous for humans taking a dip into surrounding seas.

Images and videos of the qlugħ jellyfish have been circulating for the past few weeks as they invade various beaches all over the island.

‘It is frequently found in the Mediterranean, especially during spring. It can form dense aggregations extending for kilometres on the sea surface. Specialised floating sea slugs and sea snails find it to be a delicious snack’ the ‘Spot the Jellyfish Campaign identification manual reads.

Take-away prices push food prices up as March inflation drops

According to newly released statistics by the National Statistics Office, the annual rate of inflation as measured by the RPI was 6.95% in March 2023.

This is down from 7.11% in February 2023. The 12 month moving average rate for March stood at 6.85%.

The highest annual inflation rates in March 2023 were registered in Housing (14.58 per cent) and Food (11.78 per cent).

On the other hand, the lowest annual inflation rates were registered in Water, electricity, gas and fuels (0.00 per cent), and Transport and communication (1.92 per cent) (Table 1).

The NSO pointed to the higher prices of take-aways as the main reason behind the largest upward impact being registered in the Food Index.

In March, the Housing Index registered the highest annual inflation rate at 14.58%, of which Rent registered an annual rate of 10.36%, Materials for house maintenance registered an annual rate of 13.25% and Services for house maintenance registered an annual rate of 17.39%.

The Water, electricity, gas and fuels Index registered the lowest annual inflation rate of 0.00%, since the prices of all subcomponents remained unchanged.

Standstill traffic at Mater Dei after driver leaves car unattended at roundabout

Mater Dei Hospital was in a state of standstill traffic earlier today, after a driver left their car unattended at the hospital’s roundabout. The unattended car blocked the roundabout, causing a fair amount of traffic to build up and hindering the flow of vehicles.

The incident occurred during peak hours, significantly affecting the flow of traffic, with an influx of drivers and public transport users affected.

Officials within the Malta Police Force were on site soon after to resolve the situation and proceed with regular traffic flow.
