A statement has been released confirming that, in accordance with Article 49 of the Constitution of Malta, Prime Minister Robert Abela will appoint Dr Helena Dalli as Acting President of the Republic of Malta during the absence of the President of Malta, H.E. Dr Myriam Spiteri Debono, from the country, among other instances.

‘This appointment is being made under the terms of the same constitutional article and in consultation with the Leader of the Opposition’

Dr Helena Dalli was first elected to the Maltese Parliament in 1996 and continued to serve in every legislature until 2017.

Throughout her political career, she held a number of key ministerial positions, including Minister for Industrial Relations, European Affairs, and Equality and Civil Rights.

From 2013, she was central to a series of important reforms that introduced new civil rights in Malta, greatly benefiting minority groups and contributing to a more inclusive society.

In 2019, Dr Dalli made history by becoming the first European Commissioner for Equality. In this role, she was a driving force behind the development of strategies and legislation aimed at promoting equality across the European Union.

Alongside her political work, Dr Dalli was also a lecturer at the University of Malta, where she taught Sociology of Law. In 2023, she was honoured with the National Order of Merit.
