Prime Minister Robert Abela In Rome At The Ukraine Recovery Conference

During the conference in Rome, where he is attending the Ukraine Recovery Conference, Prime Minister Robert Abela delivered a strong message of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and called for a permanent cessation of hostilities. The event brought together international leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa, focusing on Ukraine’s long-term recovery and reconstruction following the devastating war.

In his speech to the plenary session, Prime Minister Abela reaffirmed Malta’s humanitarian support for Ukraine. He recalled that since the outset of the conflict, Malta has consistently advocated for peace and dialogue at the negotiating table. This commitment has been demonstrated through Malta’s active roles in various multilateral forums, alongside ongoing humanitarian aid and solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their pursuit of justice.
“The extraordinary resilience of the Ukrainian people continues to inspire our steadfast dedication to peace, which is the foundation of prosperity. Malta offers its full solidarity and will continue to support all initiatives aimed at achieving justice, stability, and the rebuilding of the Ukrainian state.” Dr Abela stated.

He also emphasised Malta’s dedication to assisting Ukraine’s recovery, particularly through the development of resilient infrastructure, including in the energy sector, which has been deliberately targeted during Russia’s aggression. Dr Abela highlighted the critical need for cooperation between governments and the private sector to help Ukraine restore its economy and society.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister referenced Malta’s role in promoting international justice, mentioning a recent agreement signed between Ukraine and the Council of Europe during Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe. This agreement established a Special Tribunal to address the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
Under Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe, Dr Abela also drew attention to the impact of the war on Ukrainian children, a topic that was prominently included on the agenda while Malta chairs the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
In concluding, Prime Minister Abela reiterated Malta’s ongoing commitment to being a consistent voice for peace, as demonstrated during its tenure on the United Nations Security Council and its chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). He underscored the importance of continued efforts by the United States and the European Union, working alongside Ukraine, to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
