Police Conducted Over 2,000 Road Checks So Far This Year

The Maltese government is set to introduce tougher road safety laws as part of a major reform aimed at tackling drink and drug driving.
According to Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, the Malta Police Force has already carried out 2,000 road checks this year matching the total for the whole of last year, and nearly triple the number conducted three years ago.
The upcoming reform will include roadside drug testing, similar to existing alcohol breath tests, and the introduction of random checks without the need for reasonable suspicion.
Key measures include: effective prison sentences for drivers who cause a death while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, harsher fines for offenders, and expanded powers for prosecutors to request licence suspensions while cases are pending.
Transport Minister, Chris Bonett stated that the move strengthens Malta’s existing road safety framework.
Bonett added, “Irresponsible behaviour on the road can lead to tragedy for victims and their families. This law sends a clear message: road safety is a priority, and there is no room for compromise.”
