PN Takes Stand Against Extending School Hours

The Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) has reaffirmed its opposition to extending school hours in Malta, emphasizing the need to balance classroom education with family involvement. During a press conference, Shadow Minister for Education and Skills Justin Schembri and Shadow Minister for the Family Albert Buttigieg highlighted the importance of complementary roles between schools and families in children’s development.
The PN underscored that education should not replace the family’s role but should work alongside it. Studies consistently show that a child’s growth depends on both their schooling and the foundational support provided at home. The party warned against creating a society where families relinquish their responsibilities to educators, stressing that schools and families must fulfill distinct yet supportive functions.
Acknowledging new social realities, the PN proposed strengthening support services such as the Breakfast Club and Klabb 3-16, by enhancing resources and incentives for staff. However, they argued these services should be supplementary, not permanent replacements for family time.
To address evolving societal and economic challenges, the PN called for the creation of a Task Force to study social dynamics and craft solutions that prioritize family well-being over economic pressures. The party pledged to contribute ideas, emphasizing the need for measures promoting work-life balance to safeguard family life and ensure quality time for children.
