Buttigieg said that it is ironic that while we remember the horrific suffering of the Jewish population, we close our eyes to another population – Palestinians.

’40,000 people were innocently killed, mostly women and children. Their nation was turned into dust’, said the MP in a video explaining his decision.

He also condemned the actions of Hamas and their taking of hostages, but said that this does not justify the genocide against an entire population.

An additional €3 million has been allocated to local councils in Malta and Gozo through various schemes aimed at enhancing cultural activities, infrastructure, and community well-being.

These schemes include funding for annual cultural events, Christmas, and Carnival activities, as well as initiatives for healthier communities and environmental improvements.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, announced this during a press conference, highlighting the crucial role of local councils in community development and policymaking.

She emphasised that mayors and councillors are best positioned to understand the needs of their localities and residents. Zerafa Civelli reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting councils through new financial schemes and initiatives to help them deliver more impactful projects.

The schemes include reissued funding for annual cultural and Christmas activities, alongside new initiatives such as Carnival-related events.

Zerafa Civelli described these efforts as clear examples of the government’s dedication to fostering culture, traditions, and social integration.

She added that these funds will allow local councils to organise cultural and traditional events that attract residents and tourists, promoting vibrant local communities.

Additionally, the government has significantly invested in the “Funding Healthier and Higher-Quality Communities” scheme, reflecting its commitment to societal well-being, supporting vulnerable families, and creating more open spaces for recreation.

Director-General for Local Government, Emil Vassallo, provided further details about this year’s schemes, which include support for cultural activities, infrastructure upgrades, community gardens, and local council projects.

He noted that councils will also have the flexibility to decide how to utilise additional funds to address specific local needs.

Zerafa Civelli concluded by encouraging councils to take advantage of these schemes, which aim to improve communities and create a better environment for everyone.

William Harding Garden: 9,000 Square Metre Garden In The Works

From a site once earmarked for development, Pembroke residents will soon enjoy a new garden at the heart of their community, thanks to ongoing works by Project Green.

The transformation of the area was highlighted during a visit by Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli, Project Green CEO Joseph Cuschieri, Pembroke Mayor Kaylon Zammit, and the Project Green team.

The garden, spanning nearly 9,000 square meters, is being created with permeable materials to allow rainwater filtration and promote sustainable water management. Accessibility for all visitors is also a key feature of the project.

Minister Dalli described the initiative as transformative, stating, “Instead of building apartments, we are creating a vibrant green space accessible to everyone.

This reflects the Government’s commitment to regenerating and creating open spaces near residents’ homes.” The William Harding Garden is among several projects set for completion this year.

The project converts a previously concreted area into a biodiverse green space offering recreational opportunities.

It includes the restoration of a 120-meter traditional rubble wall and the revitalisation of an underground reservoir to encourage sustainable water use. Excavation works removed 1,800 cubic meters of concrete and debris, making way for permeable surfaces and footpaths.

In September, Project Green held a consultation session with residents to gather feedback. This input led to the inclusion of additional trees and shrubs in the final design to promote community engagement.

Project Manager Joseph Borda explained, “Once we removed the concrete, we laid soil to prepare for planting. This garden is part of a series of green initiatives across Malta and Gozo.”

Pembroke Mayor Kaylon Zammit expressed his satisfaction with the project, calling the garden a “green lung” for the locality. He emphasised that such collaborations benefit residents and enhance the community.
