Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced plans to reform the Industrial Tribunal and confirmed that Malta will officially recognise Palestine as a state.

Speaking in Mosta, Abela described the current tribunal system as causing uncertainty and potential injustices. The planned reform aims to deliver fairer and faster decisions through clearer laws and enhanced resources for the tribunal.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to introduce miscarriage leave and strengthen investment in palliative care services.

While Malta has previously hosted a Palestinian ambassador and implicitly recognised Palestinian statehood, this will be the country’s first formal recognition, expected to take place on June 20 during a United Nations conference.

On the international front, Abela emphasised Malta’s commitment to recognising the State of Palestine, underlining the urgent need for humanitarian aid and peace in the Middle East. He also praised Malta’s leadership role in supporting humanitarian efforts in Gaza and its rising stature on the world stage, exemplified by Malta being entrusted once again with the Presidency of the Council of Europe.

On Friday, May 2, 2025, the humanitarian aid ship Conscience, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was reportedly struck by drones in international waters approximately 14 miles off the coast of Malta. The attack resulted in a fire and significant damage to the vessel’s hull, leading to a loss of power. Thankfully the crew of 12 and four civilians aboard were unharmed.
