PL Siġġiewi Councillors Call For Independent Audit
Local

Labour Party councillors in Siġġiewi are calling for an independent audit of the local council’s finances following allegations of fraud and misappropriation of €2.4 million in public funds.

The allegations involve Nationalist councillor Francine Farrugia, who was responsible for adjudicating tenders for the council. The PL councillors say the audit is needed to verify that financial procedures have been properly followed during the current legislature, which began on 1 July 2024.

They added that the investigation would help ensure that the council, led by Nationalist mayor Julian Borg, operates with transparency and good governance.

Farrugia, 31, resigned from all roles within the Nationalist Party and the Siġġiewi Local Council after being charged with fraud, embezzlement, money laundering and computer misuse. She is accused of defrauding her former employer MCAST of over €2.3 million between 2023 and 2025 by authorising double salary payments to her own accounts.

Authorities blocked a further €122,000 transfer in July and found luxury goods, high-value property purchases and expensive vehicles during a search of her home.
