Petition To Reintroduce Italian As A Third Official Language Alongside English And Maltese Launched

A petition has been launched calling for Italian to be recognised once again as an official language of Malta, alongside Maltese and English.
The petition is written in Italian, English, and Maltese and is available online. Italian was Malta’s official language until 1934, when English and Maltese were given precedence.
Despite this, Italian remains widely spoken: around 41% of the population speak it fluently, with other estimates suggesting up to 86% of Maltese people have some knowledge of the language. It is also taught in all state schools.
The European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, highlighted the importance of Italian to Malta’s cultural heritage, saying it conveys the country’s history, values, and worldview.
As of now, over 7,000 people have signed the petition, demonstrating strong support for reintroducing Italian as an official language.
