Glen Ciantar took to social media to share his vision for Manoel Island, posting images of a reimagined landmark that doesn’t just keep its historical buildings but also new green spaces, bicycle lanes, beautiful trees and more.

Manoel Island is currently in the midst of a bit controversy as it faces new development, with developers MIDI also saying that the land would include a public park.

The petition Ciantar shared, which was created by Robert Louis Fenech, which has so far captured 12,616 signatures, aims to have a unique park ‘in the shade of the Knights’ legacy and facing the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valletta.

The green lung of the North Harbour area, home to around 150,000 residents, Parliament voted to transfer Manoel Island to private hands in 2000 for the ‘development of luxury apartments and commercial spaces.’

‘If the works are not completed by March 2026, the contract permits the Government to reclaim the entire concession.’

‘2025 presents a historic opportunity for Malta. This contract will never again be up for renegotiation.’
