Pearl Grech, the mother of 15-year-old Karin Grech who was killed in a letter-bomb attack 48 years ago, has passed away.

She was the wife of the late Professor Edwin Grech, a renowned Maltese doctor who died on 15 March 2023. The couple first met in England, where Pearl was born and raised, before settling in Malta to build their family. Together, they had two children, Karin and Kevin.

Karin’s death in 1977 remains one of Malta’s most tragic and unsolved crimes. The teenager was killed after a letter-bomb addressed to her father exploded. To this day, no one has ever been convicted over the attack.

Pearl will be given a final farewell on Saturday, 23 August, at 8.30am at San Ġwann church.

Nationalist Party leader and Pearl’s nephew, Bernard Grech, paid tribute on Facebook, saying the time has come for her to reunite with her beloved daughter Karin, finally able to hold her in her arms once more.

Prime Minister Robert Abela also honoured her memory, describing Pearl as “a woman who, even in her family’s most difficult moments, never uttered a single word of bitterness.”

Malta Daily extends its heartfelt condolences to Kevin and all of Pearl’s loved ones.
