The Pathfinder Digital Scholarship is being relaunched for 2025, with increased funding to support Maltese students pursuing postgraduate degrees in emerging technology fields. Administered by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), the national scholarship scheme provides financial assistance to students undertaking Master’s (MQF Level 7) and PhD (MQF Level 8) studies in areas critical to Malta’s economic and digital growth.

Last year, the scheme supported 16 students—13 pursuing Master’s degrees and 3 PhDs—in subjects such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science. For 2025, the total investment has been raised to €150,000, with funding available up to €10,000 for Master’s degrees and €20,000 for PhD programmes.

The scholarship focuses on academic disciplines closely aligned with Malta’s strategic priorities, including Artificial Intelligence, Digital Trust and Cybersecurity, Knowledge and Data Representation, Technology for Environmental Sustainability, and other cutting-edge fields that are essential for the country’s digital future.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, emphasised the importance of investing in talent, saying, “We know that if we want Malta to stay ahead, we need to invest in our people today. That’s exactly what we’re doing with these scholarships. We’re giving our youths the tools they need to thrive in a world shaped by digital transformation. As we work towards the Malta Vision 2050 targets, we’re building a workforce that is prepared, skilled, and ambitious.”
