Parents Of U-16 Kids With Severe Disabilities To Get Carer’s Grant

Parents in Malta who are unable to work due to caring for children under the age of 16 with severe disabilities will, for the first time, begin receiving the Carer’s Grant.
This new measure is being introduced through an investment of over €700,000 and is aimed at recognising the dedication and sacrifices made by these families.
The announcement was made during a press conference by Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, Michael Falzon, and Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering, Julia Farrugia.
Minister Falzon stated that the government is honouring its commitment to these parents, emphasising that Malta remains committed to investing in the disability sector.

He highlighted that the Carer’s Grant was originally launched in 2021 for parents of children over 16 with severe disabilities, and has since increased from €300 to approximately €5,200 per year.
Minister Farrugia underlined that these parents are not choosing to stop working lightly. Many dedicate themselves to constant medical appointments, therapies, and surgeries their children require.
She described the grant as both necessary and symbolic of the government’s support for families facing daily challenges.
Director General of Social Security, George Cremona, added that medical assessments for eligibility will follow international standards.
Payments will begin in early October and will be processed every three months. The new beneficiaries will join others already receiving support for older children with severe disabilities.
