Paola Shooting Suspect Threatened Victim With His Children

A man accused of firing several gunshots during an altercation in Paola on Sunday evening, allegedly threatened to “riddle” the targeted victim’s children with bullets, court heard today.
Melvin Debono, 34, known as ‘il-Quws’, was arraigned before Magistrate Gabriella Vella on charges including firing a weapon in public, illegal possession of a firearm, damaging property, threatening violence, and cocaine possession. He also faces charges of breaching bail conditions, disturbing the peace, and recidivism. Debono pleaded not guilty.
The incident occurred last Sunday at around 9pm in Melita Street, Paola, following an alleged dispute over money. According to testimony heard in court, the victim told police that Debono, armed with a pistol, fired shots into the road and later waved the weapon while threatening him. Video footage taken by the victim’s partner and an audio recording of a phone call were presented in court.
When police arrived at the accused’s residence, Debono initially refused to leave the house but eventually surrendered after Inspector Mark Mercieca convinced him to hand over the weapon. The defence questioned the legality of his arrest, claiming his rights were not read, but the court ruled the arrest valid.
No injuries were reported on Sunday evening. The court issued a three-year protection order for the victim and his children.
No bail request was made and Debono, who has a history of criminal offences and repeated breaches of bail, remains in custody pending further proceedings.
