Over 3,000 palm leaves are being distributed to Maltese fishermen ahead of the start of the traditional lampuki fishing season. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is coordinating the initiative from its Għammieri offices, where Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, paid a visit to observe the preparations.

The lampuki season is a key part of Malta’s fishing calendar. Palm leaves are used by fishermen to construct kannizzati, traditional rafts placed at sea to attract lampuki, also known as dolphin fish. This centuries-old method remains a core part of Malta’s maritime heritage.

Bugeja Said said the government is committed to supporting the fishing community while preserving cultural traditions. She emphasised that the distribution of palm leaves not only assists fishermen in a practical way but also helps to maintain the identity of Malta’s fishing sector. She reiterated the government’s aim to strengthen the industry through sustainable and community-focused policies.

Acting Director General for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Bjorn Azzopardi, said the free distribution of palm leaves is being offered to around 50 full-time and part-time fishermen who fish for lampuki using traditional methods. The scheme will continue until the end of the week. He thanked the staff involved in delivering the service.
