The Minister for Health and Active Aging, Jo Etienne Abela, has inaugurated a new 3.0 Tesla MRI machine at the Gozo General Hospital. This cutting-edge equipment represents an investment of €3 million and is the most advanced MRI system in the country.

Minister Abela highlighted that, since March, approximately 2,700 MRI scans have been performed using a portable machine, with around 70% of those scans on Gozitan patients. The new MRI system, now fully operational, will enhance radiology services in Gozo, offering specialized scans for various parts of the body, including the brain, heart, prostate, spinal cord, liver, and pancreas. This advanced technology will also aid in detecting tumors at an early stage.

The Minister also emphasized the continuous efforts made over the past six months to construct the necessary infrastructure for this machine. He expressed gratitude to the multidisciplinary team managing the new service and stressed the importance of patients in Gozo now being able to undergo MRI scans locally, avoiding the need to travel to Malta.

Minister Abela concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving healthcare in both Gozo and Malta.

‘Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure.’

‘All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to mind through the sadness. We got to live out our wildest dreams together and I will cherish every moment we had forever. The bond and friendship we had doesn’t happen often in a lifetime.’

‘I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently. I sadly didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It’s heartbreaking.’

Sending his love and condolences to his loved ones, he thanked ‘Payno’ for everything. ‘Love you brother.’
