Nationalist MP Darren Carabott has welcomed the government’s decision to present legal amendments that bring Malta’s controversial passport scheme to an end.

In a statement, Carabott said the move follows years of pressure and serious work by the Opposition.

‘An issue that has been going on for 12 years, a conclusion in favour of Malta and the Maltese people has been reached’, wrote Carabott.

‘Legal experts confirmed that the passport sale scheme stopped’, he continued. ‘Maltese citizenship is only given with merit: a law that has been existing, and is given to those who deserve it and has a tie with our country.’

‘It was confirmed that the Maltese passport has no price, but is a privilege that needs to be protected. The amendments which will be entered into force, according to experts, conform with the European Court sentence.’

He highlighted that every position in power can abuse of every law. Every law is only as good as who uses it. ‘It is thus the government’s responsibility that he does not abuse it’, he concluded.
