Work has begun at Simar Nature Reserve to revitalise a neglected 4,000m² area, transforming it into an accessible and environmentally rich extension of the site. The project aims to enhance biodiversity while providing green space for the community, particularly the 700 residents within a ten-minute walk.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted the importance of combining public access with conservation, stating that responsible leadership requires action to address climate and biodiversity loss. Minister for Lands Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that the project, funded 75% by the European Union and 25% by the Government, focuses on afforestation, irrigation works, and fire prevention measures. European funds, he said, allow for the protection of Malta’s natural heritage while creating sustainable spaces for families.

Simar Nature Reserve, located in a quiet northern valley, is a fully protected bird sanctuary featuring reedbeds, tree groves, and aquatic habitats. It hosts herons, kingfishers, rare Mediterranean Killifish, and tassel-weed, and is internationally recognised as a Ramsar site and part of the EU Natura 2000 network.

The redevelopment includes security measures, repaired boundaries, tree maintenance, and new walking paths made from permeable materials. Visitors will benefit from benches, picnic tables, recycling bins, informative signage, and a public convenience. No artificial lighting will be introduced to protect wildlife, while an automated irrigation system ensures efficient watering.
