Health and Active Ageing Minister Jo Etienne Abela recently visited the ongoing construction of the Regional Mental Health Services Centre in Bormla.
The project, developed in collaboration with the Ministry for Social and Affordable Housing, aims to enhance mental health care services in the region.
Currently, mental health support in Bormla is limited to three rooms within the local health centre, catering to just 12,000 residents.
The new centre will not only upgrade facilities and services but also extend its reach to approximately 47,000 people, significantly expanding access to care.
The minister emphasised that the centre will provide personalised rehabilitation plans tailored to individual needs, ensuring a more comprehensive and effective approach to mental health support.
Additionally, a dedicated sensory room for adults will be introduced to assist in managing emotions, reducing stress, and promoting overall well-being beyond traditional medication-based treatments.
“This project is a significant milestone in the government’s strategy to improve mental health care. The new regional hub will serve various communities in southern Malta, offering high-quality, patient-centred services in a modern and functional environment while enhancing patient outcomes,” the minister stated.
