On World Blood Donor Day, Meridianbet Turns Its Annual Employee Drive into a Global CSR Tradition

On World Blood Donor Day, Meridianbet Turns Its Annual Employee Drive into a Global CSR Tradition
Jun 17 2025 Share

As Meridianbet once again joins the global celebration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, the company reaffirms how it transforms corporate values into meaningful action. Across multiple countries and markets, Meridianbet and the Meridianbet Foundation are organizing and participating in voluntary blood donation drives—reiterating a long-standing commitment to public health and community solidarity.

Meridianbet Joins Global Effort to Tackle Blood Shortages, Turning Employee Action into Lifesaving Impact

In 2025, blood donation remains an urgent yet under-addressed issue. Globally, around 118.5 million units of blood are donated each year, yet demand still outpaces supply—especially in low- and middle‑income countries, which account for 60% of donations while representing 84% of the global population.

Recognizing this gap, Meridianbet has transformed its support for healthcare into a coordinated, multinational blood donation campaign, helping national health systems address dangerously low reserves.

From Local Action to Global Movement

What began as a local initiative in Serbia has evolved into a multi-market movement, with employees in Europe, Africa, and Latin America stepping up. These efforts are more than symbolic—they’re part of a wider CSR and ESG strategy, which saw over 293 social impact actions in 2024 alone.

One standout story comes from a Meridianbet employee who has donated blood more than 40 times, becoming a role model across the company. “When you realize that one unit of blood can save up to three lives, it becomes clear—we’re not just giving blood, we’re giving someone another chance,” he said.

Jelena Jocić, spokesperson for the Meridianbet Foundation in Serbia, adds: “We don’t wait for a report to act—we live our values every day. Donating blood is the purest form of giving, and we are proud that our teams across markets are stepping forward, again and again.”

Solidarity in Action: Supporting Healthcare Systems

Meridianbet’s activities are conducted in full coordination with national blood transfusion services and local health authorities, ensuring safety and medical compliance. In Malta, for example, Meridianbet employees supported the country’s blood donation system, which relies heavily on civic responsibility due to Malta’s small population size.

Even one donation can help save a life—and your contribution can make a real difference in the community.

Blood Donation as Part of Meridianbet’s Broader Healthcare Commitment

This global blood drive builds on a wide range of other healthcare initiatives, including:

Donation campaigns for maternity hospitals through the “Scan. Help.” initiative
Direct support to health centers in underserved areas across LATAM and Africa
Breast cancer awareness campaigns, conducted simultaneously across 12 countries

These activities align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. Meridianbet is also a proud member of the UN Global Compact.

Empowering Employees as Catalysts for Good

Meridianbet’s social impact is driven by its people. In 2024 alone, employees dedicated over 5,027 hours to community activities. The blood donation drive is not only a healthcare effort—it also strengthens team unity and reinforces company values.

With 293 CSR initiatives and over 18,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries in 2024, Meridianbet continues to lead by example.

Ministry For Transport To Tackle Cab Driver Fatigue

Ministry For Transport To Tackle Cab Driver Fatigue
Jun 17 2025 Share

The Ministry for Transport is preparing to introduce new legislation aimed at limiting the number of hours cab drivers can work, following ongoing concerns about fatigue-related safety risks, Malta Daily is informed.

The proposed changes, expected to be presented in Parliament after the summer recess, will give the authority legal powers to enforce working time rules specifically within the cab industry.

Malta daily Facebook 970x90

Currently, only ride-hailing platforms such as Bolt, Uber and eCabs can monitor drivers’ hours, which has led to situations where individuals work long shifts across multiple platforms.

Some drivers reportedly work up to 16 hours a day or exceed 65 hours a week, particularly during peak tourist seasons.

The Ministry for Transport, along with Transport Malta, intends to gather data from all three major platforms to track driving hours. The planned regulations are based on existing labour laws, which require workers to rest for 11 hours after a 12-hour shift, take a break after six hours, and have one day off per week.

An escalating penalty system will be introduced for both drivers and operators who breach the new rules, with sanctions ranging from fines to the suspension of driver tags.

Earlier this year, over 1,400 cabs were taken off the road due to licence issues, particularly involving false garaging addresses. Enforcement efforts also include public reporting channels for illegally parked Y-plate vehicles.

Minister Schembri emphasised that the Vision is not merely a document of aspirations for 2050 but also includes specific goals to be achieved by 2035. He highlighted that the measure of success will no longer be based solely on Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but will also incorporate three new indices recognised by the United Nations and Eurostat, focusing on the quality of life of individuals.

The Minister also outlined the various phases of consultations already undertaken and explained that the public consultation phase on Vision Malta 2050 remains open until 9 September 2025. The public is encouraged to contribute via envision2050.gov.mt.

‘I’ve stood in safety shoes (not comfortable) and now I stand in scrubs. What I built with my hands back then laid the foundation for what I build now: trust, care and making a difference.’

‘I’m proud of where I come from, and even prouder of where l’m going.

Forever grateful to those who supported me and believed in me: my family, friends and the people who reminded me why I started.’

Congratulations Omar!
