No Suspended Sentences For Fatal Road Accidents Says PM

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced stricter measures against reckless driving, particularly in cases where alcohol or drugs are involved.
Speaking on the government’s plans to improve road safety, he explained that harsher penalties will apply to drivers who cause fatalities while under the influence.
Under the new proposals, the Courts will no longer be allowed to issue suspended sentences in such cases.
Instead, offenders will face effective prison terms, marking a significant step towards creating a stronger deterrent.
Abela stressed that irresponsible driving endangers not only the driver but also innocent people, and that such behaviour can no longer be treated lightly.
The Prime Minister added that enforcement efforts are already being reinforced. He highlighted the inter-ministerial collaboration between Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Transport Minister Chris Bonett, alongside the commitment of dedicated enforcement officials working to make Malta’s roads safer.
