According to Rota, July saw Malta surpassing the total number of road deaths recorded in both 2023 and 2024, and is on course to exceed 2022’s record high.

As road fatalities continue to rise across the country, Rota, a Maltese eNGO that advocates for safe cycling, is calling for urgent reform and reflection through a powerful online memorial dedicated to road victims in Malta.

The memorial features photographs of individuals who lost their lives on Maltese roads, sourced from public news articles and social media.

In a public statement, Rota said, “Each victim was more than just a statistic. They were people with families, dreams, and futures that were tragically cut short.”

Rota argues that Malta’s road safety crisis stems from a combination of weak legislation, poor enforcement, and infrastructure that encourages speeding rather than safety.

A photo on Rota’s website, displayed above their road victims memorial, carries the caption: “Another pedestrian dies after being hit by a car” but the word “pedestrian” can just as easily be replaced with father, friend, neighbour, grandfather, girlfriend, brother, mother, boyfriend, grandmother, cousin, colleague, or sister.
