A striking new public sculpture titled ‘Il-Familja’ has been unveiled at the entrance to St Julian’s and Paceville, marking a new chapter in the area’s evolving identity.

Created by local artist Zack Ritchie, the installation features a group of copper figures holding hands, each representing a different age, energy and rhythm of life.

With musical notes for heads, the figures are intended to symbolise the unique frequency every individual brings to a community. “Il-Familja is a tribute to Malta’s evolving identity,” Ritchie said in a public statement. “It’s a reminder that spaces change, but community stays”.

Long known for its nightlife, the Paceville area is increasingly becoming a home for families, workers and creatives, a transformation the artist acknowledges through this work. The sculpture stands as a celebration of togetherness and shared growth, with Ritchie adding: “We grow together, adapt together, and shape what’s next together.”

This marks Ritchie’s sixth public sculpture in the area and forms part of his broader artistic mission to turn Malta into what he describes as a “cultural playground.”
