New Pest Moth Species Found In Gozo

New Pest Moth Species Found In Gozo
Environment

A moth species known as the Ficus-feeding erebid moth (Rhesala moestalis) has been recorded in the Maltese Islands for the first time, marking its first known appearance in Europe.

Originally native to tropical regions of Africa and Asia, this noctuid moth is considered a potential pest due to its feeding habits.

The discovery was made in Gozo, where the moth was found infesting rabbit feed at a major pet supply shop.

Although it most likely arrived in Malta through the importation of plants such as ornamental Ficus species, its presence in commercial feed highlights the varied ways invasive insects can enter new environments.

The larvae feed on the leaves of Ficus plants, including figs and rubber trees, which raises concerns about its potential to spread and cause damage to ornamental and cultivated plants.

The species was identified and collected during pest control inspections by Arnold Sciberras, director of the Exterminator company.

Efforts were made to contain the spread of the moth, with contributions from lepidopterist Jonathan Agius and team member Jeffrey Sciberras.
