Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Dr Jo Etienne Abela, together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Dr Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, inaugurated a new Palliative Care ward at St Vincent de Paul Hospital.

The new ward, with a capacity of 16 beds, represents an important step in providing end-of-life care for elderly patients facing serious conditions that significantly impact their lives. It forms part of a broader vision by St Vincent de Paul to strengthen specialised services and improve the quality of care in an integrated and holistic manner.

Dr Abela highlighted that the ward, which accommodates 16 patients, demonstrates the Government’s commitment to protection and palliative care for Maltese and Gozitan patients. “Through this ward, individuals from the community, as well as from other entities, will receive dignified care at this stage of life, delivered in the best possible way,” he said.

Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea emphasised that this initiative exemplifies the continued expansion of Active Ageing services to meet the real needs of patients. “Palliative care is not only about physical treatment but also addresses emotional and spiritual needs. It respects the dignity of the person until the end of their life. This facility is another step towards a more sensitive, personalised, and respectful care system,” he added.
