Following the recent local council elections, Birkirkara is still without a mayor after disagreements on who to elect in the head seat.

This comes after independent candidate Kaylocke Buhagiar was elected after having left the Labour Party.

Birkirkara elected 6 Labour candidates and 6 PN candidates – with Yana Borg Debono Grech, Alfred Attard, Gilmour Borg, Rosette Cassar, Karl Cutajar and Stefano Sicari representing the former and Desirei Grech, Maurizio Gauci, Antoine Attard, Jade England, Luke Vella and Marie Claire Zammit Bonello representing the latter.

Yana Borg Debono Grech was the most popular PL candidate in the locality with 1,805 votes, whereas Desirei Grech had the most votes for the PN in Birkirkara at 1,802.

In two statements, PN’s Desirei Grech highlighted how the Nationalists gained the majority of votes in the locality, saying that ‘common sense should win out and the will of the majority should be respected.’

However, she later explained that there was no agreement reached and that a meeting is planned for next week. PL’s top candidate too, Yana Debono Grech, wrote how each member of each party voted for their respective mayor candidate.

The independent candidate, Kaylocke, voted against both parties, despite having been nominated as vice-mayor by the PL.
