Works are underway on a new electricity distribution centre in Siġġiewi, with an investment of €20 million financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). This project marks a major step forward in strengthening the electricity infrastructure in the central and southern regions of Malta.

During a visit on site, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised the government’s commitment to long-term energy security.  “Through projects like this, we are investing not only in today’s needs but also in Malta’s future. Strengthening our electricity network is essential to support families, businesses, and the growing integration of renewable energy. These projects are ensuring that Malta’s energy infrastructure remains robust, sustainable, and resilient for now and in the future.”

Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi emphasised that this investment in Siġġiewi forms part of a broader vision for our country to have modern, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure. He stressed that: “With European funds, we are carrying out projects that are essential for strengthening our country’s infrastructure. This Distribution Centre will reinforce our energy network, improve the security of supply, and accelerate the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy, in line with the national and European vision for the future of our country.”

The new 33/11 kV Siġġiewi Distribution Centre will be equipped with two 30 MVA transformers, providing the capacity needed to meet both current and future energy demand. Once operational, this centre will significantly improve the reliability and efficiency of the electricity network supplying approximately 12,000 customers across f’Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Siġġiewi, Ħal Qormi, Mqabba and Qrendi.

Construction works are already well underway, with 18 kilometres of new 33kV cables laid to connect the new centre to Enemalta’s wider distribution system. The project is scheduled for completion by June of next year.

Enemalta Executive Chairperson Inġ Ryan Fava stated, “This investment further highlights Enemalta’s commitment to providing our customers with a more resilient and future-ready electricity network. By reinforcing the infrastructure in these localities, we are not only addressing current demand but also preparing for the increased energy needs of tomorrow.”

In parallel, work on a new distribution centre in Naxxar and on the St. Andrew’s Distribution Centre are moving ahead at a fast pace. At the same time, ongoing upgrades at the Msida Distribution Centre will soon double its capacity, further strengthening supply in this high-demand area.
