A new political force has emerged in Malta with the launch of Momentum, a centrist party aiming to reform governance and promote environmental and economic justice.

Unveiled at a launch event, Momentum envisions “a resilient and innovative Malta where all residents thrive.”

Led by former European Green Party secretary-general Arnold Cassola as chairperson, the party builds on Cassola’s success in the 2024 European Parliament elections, where he secured 13,000 first-preference votes as an independent. The party’s core principles include transparency, ethical leadership, and evidence-based decision-making.

“We are a centrist party focused on good governance, economic justice, and an environment that flourishes naturally,” said committee member and junior architect Sumaya Ben Saad.

Secretary-general Mark Camilleri Gambin, a tech entrepreneur, outlined the party’s zero-tolerance approach to corruption, alongside its commitment to equality and non-discrimination.

Momentum’s leadership includes a diverse group of professionals, such as Dr Matthew Agius Galea, who emphasised values like honesty, competence, and collaboration.

The party’s three main priorities—good governance, environmental sustainability, and economic justice—aim to address public dissatisfaction with Malta’s two-party system.

Momentum also gained international backing, with support from European centrist figures at the recent European Democratic Party congress.
