A meaningful milestone was marked at St James Hospital with the unveiling of a new bronze monument by renowned Maltese sculptor Chris Ebejer.

Installed at the hospital’s main entrance, the statue stands as a striking symbol of hope, compassion, and faith.

The sculpture depicts a robed Marian figure, her arms outstretched in a serene gesture of welcome and reflection. Cast in bronze, the piece was commissioned to reflect the founding vision of the hospital’s creators, who wished for the Virgin Mary to offer comfort to all who entered the space.

Chris Ebejer described the project as a privilege: “It was an honour to create a work that unites artistic expression with spiritual meaning. This monument is not merely decorative—it serves as a reminder of divine presence in moments of healing and human fragility.”

Hospital founder and director Dr Josie Muscat expressed deep satisfaction at the realisation of a long-standing aspiration. “This statue fulfils a promise made at the hospital’s inception. It reflects our commitment to pairing medical excellence with compassion and spiritual care.”

The statue was blessed by His Grace Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna.

Crafted in Tuscany and cast in bronze before being transported to Malta, the figure stands upon three blocks of solid marble, forming the outline of an embracing arm. Its pedestal bears a Maltese inscription from the Mellieħa Sanctuary: “Fik ittamaw missirijietna, ittamaw u inti ħlisthom” – “In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted and you delivered them.”

Ebejer, acclaimed for his public artworks in Malta and abroad, adds this monument to an impressive portfolio, including installations at Mater Dei Hospital, Floriana, Dingli, and beyond.
