Nearly 3,000 Stairlift Applications Approved In Malta, With Over €18 Million Invested

During a press conference, Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes announced that by the end of last month, more than €4.5 million had already been invested in the stairlift initiative. The primary aim of the scheme is to help older persons with disabilities or mobility issues strengthen accessibility within their homes.
Between 2023 and this year, over 1,600 stairlifts were approved across residences in Malta and Gozo. This year alone, 454 applications have already been given the green light, bringing the average to more than one approval per day.

Minister Galdes said, “Since the launch of this scheme, almost 3,000 applications have been approved, with an investment of over €18 million. To ensure that our elderly have the possibility to continue living in their homes and communities, we must provide services such as this scheme to enhance accessibility. Through these efforts, we are supporting older people and those with mobility challenges to enjoy a better quality of life.”
The stairlift scheme, managed by the Housing Authority, funds up to €7,000 of the installation costs for each stairlift.
Matthew Zerafa, Chief Executive of the Housing Authority, added that through such initiatives, the authority is ensuring that people continue to live with dignity and independence in the communities where they grew up.
